What causes a loud Air conditioner

Four Main Causes of a Loud Air Conditioner

There are four main reasons an AC unit can be loud. Understanding the main causes can help you make your air conditioner as quiet as it can be.

Vibrations

Sometimes Vibrations in can cause loud noises.

Loud Fan

AC units blow a lot of air, and that can be loud.

Loud Compressor

The most common cause is a loud compressor.

Mechanical

Sometimes things just aren’t running right.

Best on the market

Why Choose Our AC Sound Blanket?

We double up the sound dampening performance by combining a specially formulated glass wool sound dampening insulation with a sound rated Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) for an unmatched double-layer performance.

Most AC sound blankets on the market skip the Mass Loaded Vinyl all together. Others, try to pass off regular vinyl flooring material that simply doesn’t dampen sound nearly as well.

Our AC sound blanket is literally the best on the market. And yes, there is a difference.

Understanding Sound Dampening and why it matters

When choosing an AC sound blanket, the effectiveness of noise reduction comes down to measurable acoustic ratings. Two of the most important are:

Sound Transmission Class (STC)

STC measures how well a material blocks airborne sound, such as the humming or droning noise from an AC compressor. A higher STC rating means less sound passes through the material. Standard vinyl sheets — like those used in flooring — typically offer low STC values because they weren’t engineered for acoustic use. By contrast, the mass loaded vinyl (MLV) we use is specifically designed to stop sound transmission. Our blanket incorporates 2mm MLV, which is dense enough to block a wide range of compressor noise frequencies.

Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC)

NRC measures how much sound a material absorbs rather than reflects. While STC blocks noise, NRC reduces reverberation and overall loudness. Many sound blankets rely only on thin insulation that has limited absorption ability. Our system uses acoustic-grade glass wool, a material engineered to absorb sound energy across the frequencies most common in HVAC systems.

Why Our Design Works Better

By combining high-STC MLV with high-NRC glass wool, our blanket not only blocks compressor noise from escaping but also absorbs the vibration and droning that make an air conditioner sound intrusive. This dual-layer approach is why our sound blanket outperforms the rest.
